For a long time, around 3000 years, cats were worshipped in Ancient Egypt. They were social and religious to Egyptians.
But why did they honor cats?
Well, first off all, cats are amazing, but secondly, it was because they thought cats kept the bad out and the good in! The Egyptians cared so much about cats that when one died, they were mummified and put in a tomb. But let's say, King Tut had a cat and it died, King Tut could choose whether he wanted his cat to have its own tomb or wanted to be in his tomb.
Cats were also a goddess. You may be familiar with a statue they built, called the Sphinx. There's a breed of cat called Sphynx cat, and the statue is supposed to be half lion, and half human.
There was a goddess named Bastet, who could transform into a cat. They built a beautiful temple for her, and people from all around Egypt would come see.
