You may realize you've only heard your cat meow when they need you, or they are trying to get something across to you, like 'feed me', 'I want a treat' or 'let me go!'. Cats don't communicate with other cats by meowing.
Kittens may meow often to get their mother's attention or to try and talk to someone. They still haven't figured everything out yet. But mostly, cats only meow when they want something or are trying to tell a human something. So, before humans, did cats meow?
Yes, of course, cats meowed. Maybe when they were hurt, or they were trying to communicate with another animal. Cats meow to get people's (or other animals) attention. So, if someone was ignoring a cat, this is a time they would meow.
Cats do sometimes meow to each other, maybe to greet each other, but that may be it. They also meow when they are in argument or fight. What would a cat get into an argument about? Cats mostly use body language to communicate. They're not like humans, where they have clear ways of communicating to each other, even if they meow to each other, it's not like words.
Cats have over 100 different sounds, each one can mean a different thing. It could be 'can I have a belly rub', or even 'don't you think about giving me a belly rub right now'!
That's all for now, stay tuned for more news!
